How to Get an NTN Number in Pakistan (2026)

3 min read

If you’ve ever tried to open a business bank account, file taxes, or register a company you’ve hit the same wall: you need an NTN first. Here’s the simplest possible breakdown of what it is and how to get one.

What is an NTN, actually?

Your National Tax Number (NTN) is your official ID in Pakistan’s tax system. For most individuals, it’s literally the same as your CNIC — you just need to activate it on FBR’s portal.

WhoYour NTN
Individual (salaried, freelancer, self-employed)Same as your 13-digit CNIC
Company / AOP (Association of Persons)A separate 7-digit number issued after registration

Do you actually need one?

Short answer: yes, if any of these apply to you.

SituationDo you need an NTN?
You have a salary above the taxable limitYes
You’re a freelancer earning any incomeYes
You run a business or sole proprietorshipYes
You own property or a vehicleYes
You want to open a business bank accountYes
Your income is currently zeroStill recommended — costs nothing, saves headaches later

What you need before you start

DocumentRequired for
CNIC (front and back)Everyone
Active mobile number (registered in your own name)Everyone
Personal email addressEveryone
Proof of address (utility bill / rent agreement)Everyone
Employer’s NTN (optional but helpful)Salaried individuals
Nature of work / business descriptionFreelancers, sole proprietors
Business address proof + business nameSole proprietors, businesses
Incorporation certificate + directors’ CNICsCompanies

Keep scanned copies (JPG or PDF) ready before you start — the form times out if you go hunting for documents mid-way.

The actual steps

StepWhat you do
1Go to iris.fbr.gov.pk
2Click “Registration for Unregistered Person”
3Enter your CNIC (no dashes) and basic details
4Verify via the OTP sent to your mobile number
5Fill in your income source / nature of work
6Upload your documents
7Submit — your NTN is generated automatically
8Download your certificate from Completed Tasks → Registration → 181 (Order)

That’s it. For a straightforward individual registration, this takes 15 to 30 minutes.

How long until it’s active?

StageTimeline
NTN generatedInstantly, upon submission
Registration reviewed/activated1–2 working days
Appears on Active Taxpayer List (after filing a return)7–10 working days

One thing people mix up

Having an NTN just means you’re registered. It does not automatically make you a filer. You only become a filer — and unlock the lower tax rates — once you actually file your income tax return. NTN is step one; filing is step two.

Common mistakes that cause delays

  • Mobile number not linked to your name in NADRA — the OTP will fail. Fix this first if you’re having login trouble.
  • Ported your number between networks (e.g. Ufone to Jazz) — this can block the SMS. Send a blank text to 9966 to reset it.
  • Blurry or mismatched documents — a utility bill under a family member’s name instead of yours can cause rejection.
  • Using mobile browser — some parts of the form don’t render properly. Use a laptop or desktop.
