AI Identity Theft Is Real — Here’s How to Protect Yourself

3 min read

What Happens When AI Owns Your Identity More Than You Do?

We live in a world run by algorithms. And now, AI identity theft is one of the fastest-growing threats. It doesn’t steal your money — it steals you.

Deepfake tools can copy your face, your voice, and even how you move. They do it without asking. Real people are being turned into digital puppets used in scams, lies, and political games.

How AI Identity Theft Happens Without Consent

Imagine waking up to find a video of you endorsing crypto in fluent Mandarin. Except it’s not you. But it looks and sounds just like you, thanks to synthetic media tools like Synthesia.

For example, this has already happened to public figures like model Connor Yeates. His image was used to support a West African military leader. Similarly, actor Simon Lee’s AI likeness was manipulated to promote fake health cures.

No Consent. No Control.

Most victims never even signed a release. Publicly available images scraped from social media, YouTube interviews, or podcasts are enough to build a frighteningly convincing digital clone using open-source deepfake software. There’s often no opt-out — just damage control after the fact.

Even influencers with millions of followers aren’t immune. But what about regular people? Their stolen likenesses can be used to generate fake job applications, create explicit content, or manipulate family and friends in phishing scams.

The Law Can’t Keep Up

Some U.S. states have “right of publicity” or biometric privacy laws, but enforcement is sluggish and fragmented. Internationally, regulations are even more inconsistent. Meanwhile, AI tools are becoming more powerful, cheaper, and easier to use.

According to The Guardian, even platforms that claim to moderate content often let manipulated media slip through the cracks, citing difficulty in identifying deepfakes at scale.

What’s at Stake

This isn’t just a legal issue it’s existential. When your face can be stolen and your voice faked, what does it mean to “own” your identity?

We need stricter regulations, platform accountability, and greater public awareness. Because in the age of AI, your silence can be sold and your likeness turned into a lie.

What You Can Do

While laws and platforms catch up, individuals can take steps to protect themselves:

  • Avoid posting high-resolution face videos publicly.
  • Use digital watermarking tools where possible.
  • Report and document misuse of your likeness immediately.
  • Stay informed about privacy tools and AI-monitoring services.
